タイトル通り、チャーリー・パーカーのヴァーヴ時代の演奏をそっくり収録した10枚組セット。以前日本盤も発売されたが、その後廃盤になってしまったので、このアメリカ盤は貴重だ。パーカーのヴァーヴ時代は46年のJATPセッションから始まる。1枚目がそれ。ここではディジー・ガレスピー、バック・クレイトン、ハワード・マギー、ウィリー・スミス、レスター・ヤング、コールマン・ホーキンスらと共演している。最後のセッションは54年のスタジオ録音で、それは『プレイズ・コール・ポーター』というアルバム名で知られるもの。ヴァーヴはJATPを主宰したノーマン・グランツのワンマン・レーベルとあって、パーカーもこのレーベルでは他流試合をたくさん経験した。そのあたりがサヴォイやダイアル・セッションと大きく違う点だ。またヴァーヴ時代にパーカーはラテン曲集を録音、ウィズ・ストリングス・セッションも行なったが、それらがすべてここに収録されている。ジャズ・ファンにとってかけがえのない、まるで宝石箱のようなセットだ。（市川正二）

JATPの常連メンバーとのジャム。パーカー、ジョニーホッジス、ベニーカーターの3アルト＋ベンウェブスター、フリップフィリップスの2テナー＋チャーリーシェーヴァ－スのペット＋オスカーピーターソン、レイブラウン、バーニーケッセル、JCハードのリズム。濃いです。
パーカー、ピーターソン、ケッセルのモダン組対ホッジス他のスイング組、ともとれるこのセッション、やっぱりパーカーはこの面子の中でも頭ひとつ抜けています。この人が吹くと、その場に緊張感が漂う。それが良かったのか、他のメンバーもかなり頑張っています。
アップテンポなブルース、バラードメドレーときて、ピーターソンのswinggin'なイントロで導かれるWhat is this thing called love、そして、極めつけのドローンとしたスローテンポのブルース！全編に渡ってパーカー節炸裂！です。一番ありがちなパーカーフレーズ、かも。
音質は極めてよく、パーカーを聴き始めの方には、とてもお勧めです。

JATPの常連メンバーとのジャム。パーカー、ジョニーホッジス、ベニーカーターの3アルト＋ベンウェブスター、フリップフィリップスの2テナー＋チャーリーシェーヴァ－スのペット＋オスカーピーターソン、レイブラウン、バーニーケッセル、JCハードのリズム。濃いです。
パーカー、ピーターソン、ケッセルのモダン組対ホッジス他のスイング組、ともとれるこのセッション、やっぱりパーカーはこの面子の中でも頭ひとつ抜けています。この人が吹くと、その場に緊張感が漂う。それが良かったのか、他のメンバーもかなり頑張っています。
アップテンポなブルース、バラードメドレーときて、ピーターソンのswinggin'なイントロで導かれるWhat is this thing called love、そして、極めつけのドローンとしたスローテンポのブルース！全編に渡ってパーカー節炸裂！です。一番ありがちなパーカーフレーズ、かも。
音質は極めてよく、パーカーを聴き始めの方には、とてもお勧めです。

3年ぶりのアルバムかな。あいかわらずBrett社長をフィーチャーした6人体制。いいね、今回。前作よりはるかに気に入った。ま、RELIGIONの場合、音楽性の変化なんてないんでアルバムの評価は純粋に好きな曲が多いか否か（気に入った歌メロが多いか否か）で決まる気がしないでもない。あかん、もう書くことがない。レビューだのに、もう書くことがない。結論。RELIGIONのレビューを書くのは難しい。ｗｗ
